VIDEO: How much do the medium and format of your board info matter?

Video companion to episodes 152 and 153 of One Minute Governance

Here we go! It’s what you’ve been waiting for your whole life: a video about a podcast on a blog platform. If you’re feeling super adventurous, scroll down for a transcript of a video about a podcast on a blog platform. More specifically, it’s the second video companion to season 4 of One Minute Governance (part 1 here in case you missed it). This one lines up with episodes 152 and 153 about information medium and format.

I know you get it already, but just in case: medium and format matter. A three-minute video about two one-minute podcast episodes on a silly blog platform. Remember being intentional about cultivating effective conditions? That’s what I’m trying to do here: experiment!

Oh, and I almost forgot. Here’s the latest OMG playlist. It’s got songs about media and songs that are super short. Get it?

And here are some questions for you to consider on your governance journey:

  • Why do you use the media you use? In other words, why is your written material written? Why is it in PDF (or whatever other format you use)? What other media *could* you use, either in addition or insted?

  • How do you feel most comfortable communicating? Do you prefer to write a letter/email/etc.? Do you like a casual conversation? Do you feel comfortable recording voice memos or videos? What medium brings out the best in you?

  • What do you hope to accomplish when communicating with your board/management? How do the medium and format affect your ability to get what you want/need? What new things could you try?

Ultra special thanks to my friend of 30-ish years, Derek Christoff (AKA D-Sisive, AKA Orville Knoblich) for putting so much love into the video edits, which make me seem a lot more interesting and funny and handsome than I am.

Thanks for watching!

TRANSCRIPT:

Wow, my hair is kind of messed up. Hey, whatever... just look like a rockstar. Here's your slate. Hey, everybody, it's Matt and this video is a companion to Episode 152 and 153 of One Minute Governance. Those are about the medium and format of information that gets shared between board and management. So let's think about it this way, you're watching a video about a podcast and in the background of the video, I'm showing you these pixelated images and messages on this board here. And I'm giving you a playlist of music to listen to, and the video is going to be posted on a blog platform. All this is intentional, not because I expect everybody to like it. And not because I think supplementing a podcast with a video is going to make the podcast better or make the video more appealing. I don't even really know how you got here. Because, I mean, I don't know, are you a One Minute Governance listener? Are you a Ground-Up Governance subscriber? Or something else, some other kind of governance nerd? Either way, some of you are going to find this really fun and useful. Some of you are going to find it a little bit stupid and maybe not useful. Either way that gets to the heart of what I'm trying to be intentional about. I want as many people as possible to get into the OMG vibe. Why? Because I think that my message matters. And so I'm going to try a few different media and formats in an attempt to engage as many people if possible. Also the podcast in question, One Minute Governance, is almost always 60 to 90 seconds long. That's also intentional. It could have been 60 to 90 minutes. But, mostly, I don't like long podcasts and you've already subscribed to tons of long podcasts. I wanted a way to squeeze into your packed schedule. How is this relevant to boardrooms? I'm pretty sure in my experience the stickiest convention in the way that boards and managers work together is the information medium and format. I mean, how frequently do you try communicating to each other in new ways? And no, I'm not just talking about switching from like printed material to PDF, although that's...something. I guess. And I'm not talking about using your board management software as a secure document repository. I'm talking about trying something really different. Like how hard is it for a CEO or board chair or whoever to pick up their phone and record a two minute video of them just talking about how they feel about something like a new opportunity or a new challenge or whatever, just to see how it changes the way people engage. Just mess around with stuff - video, audio, music, long, short, visual, whatever - and pay attention to what happens.
